Forbes valued the Suns at $235M in 1998 and $6.0B in 2026, about 26 times as much. The biggest one-year jump was $1.3B, from 2022 to 2023; the biggest in percentage terms was 61%, from 2014 to 2015.

How the current owner bought it

  • Forbes records that the NBA suspended Robert Sarver for one year and fined him $10M in September 2022. This followed a workplace-conduct investigation, and he then sold.
  • Ishbia agreed terms on 20 December 2022. The NBA approved on 6 February 2023 and the sale closed the next day.
  • The $4B valuation was then an NBA record. He bought all of the Sarver shares plus some partner holdings.
  • Other limited partners could sell at the same valuation or stay. All but two sold.
  • The Arizona Republic reported that a JPMorgan loan helped fund the purchase. Its size is disputed.

How the team is run

  • Ishbia is governor. After the 2024-25 season he fired coach Mike Budenholzer and replaced the general manager.
  • The city owns the arena and a Suns company runs it. Its name is a brand of UWM, his mortgage company, under a 10-year deal worth about $115M.
  • He has kept local games on free-to-air television.
  • Front Office Sports and AP reported that Kohlberg and Seldin sued in Delaware in 2025, alleging self-dealing. Their claims included above-market loans to the team and the naming deal. The Suns reject the claims and say the pair want a premium buyout.
  • Status: in March 2026 both sides agreed to confidential binding mediation, and the trial was cancelled. A buyout would lift Ishbia to about 96%; none had been reported by 28 October 2026.
